Commonwealth Summer School 2018

Dear students,

We are pleased to share an opportunity of Commonwealth Summer School 2018 with you.

The annual Commonwealth Summer School will be hosted between the July 1 - 9, 2018 at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The School provides a forum to bring together high-quality students from every corner of the Commonwealth to discuss interdisciplinary issues of global importance. This year's programme will focus on Designing and Creating Sustainable Communities.

The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) is committed to mixing local and regional students with those from further afield who may have never had the opportunity to leave their own regions. To ensure this, the ACU is offering a limited number of bursaries for students from member universities only: full bursaries (including return economy air travel to Rwanda, registration fees, accommodation and most meals); and partial bursaries (which may be used towards registration fees or travel). Bursaries, in either case, cannot be used to cover the cost of visas, vaccinations or transfer costs to and from airports. IBA, Karachi is a member of ACU and therefore, our selected students may be granted a bursary upon their selection.

Details of the programme are given below for your ready reference.

In case of any concern, please feel free to contact us at internationaloffice@iba.edu.pk.

Kind regards,

The Commonwealth Summer School was instigated by the ACU in 2011. It aims to provide a forum to bring together high quality students from every corner of the Commonwealth to discuss interdisciplinary issues of global importance.

Theme: Designing and creating sustainable communities
The particular urban environment of Hong Kong makes it a perfect location for a Summer School on the theme of Designing and Creating Sustainable Communities. Designing and creating sustainable communities requires resources. Some resources allow open access, such as air; others may be of limited access; and some are regulated for collective use. We can call these resources our 'commons'. It would be impossible to build a sustainable community if all resources were privatised or commodified.

During the Summer School, participants will learn to identify and conserve our common resources in the urban realm. The focus will be on creating more commons for collective use, to improve the environment and build sustainable communities for the flourishing of humanity.

Applicant must either be studying for a postgraduate degree (full or part-time) or in the final year of an undergraduate degree, with the expectation of moving to postgraduate study on completion.

Priority will be given to students from member institutions who have not had the opportunity to travel outside their home region.
